This image shows the contrasting soft and sharp contours of the windblown desert in the northernmost part of Chad. The sparse human population is largely nomadic, with some livestock, mostly small ruminants and camels. Strong winds from the northeast can bring violent sandstorms to the area.

One of the largest and most impressive river deltas in the world, the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta is located in Southwest Alaska where the Yukon and Kuskokwim Rivers empty into the Bering Sea. The large size of the delta is comparable to the entire U.S. state of Louisiana. The silted river water mixes with the ocean water in the Bering Sea, and it creates a dramatic cloudy feature in this aerial image from space.
